Linnets ready to meet top rivals head on

McIntyre upbeat as team prepare to take on leaders

- BY RICHARD PARTINGTON

RUNCORN Linnets will be relishing the prospect of taking on league leaders Workington and proving their doubters wrong over the next few weeks.

That’s according to manager Calum McIntyre, who acknowledges five of his side’s next six games will see Linnets ranked as underdogs.

After the trip to Workington, Linnets face Northern Premier League West Division fixtures against top-five sides Mossley, Marine and Trafford, while FC United of Manchester await McIntyre’s side in the FA Trophy.

“We’ve got a run of games now where I think everyone on the outside will look at five of those six fixtures and go ‘Runcorn Linnets, no points,’” he said.

“We’re playing the sides right at the top of the division, they are established sides with resources that I can’t even dream about, but we will have a right go and that starts at Workington on Saturday.

“We will try to work hard against a side that has dominated this league and this level in recent years and we’ll be trying to make sure we go to Workington and put a performance on.”

Linnets ran out 4-0 winners against struggling Ramsbottom

United at the weekend and McIntyre said: “We’ll need to be better over the next six games, for us five of the next six are a complete free hit I’m told – we’ll see about that, we’ll be doing everything we can to get some sort of points return.”

“The win against Ramsbottom capped off a pleasing week – to have won in the FA Trophy, put the ball in the back of the net repeatedly at Tadcaster, three points on Tuesday night gave us the opportunity to back that up with another three.

“That’s back to back home victories and I’ve talked over and over again about the importance of back-to-backs, so I was really pleased with that.

“I thought we were good value to win the game. We maybe made the wrong decisions at times in the final third, but it felt like when we got that second goal late in the game it just put it to bed and gave us the opportunity to put the icing on the cake.

“So, really pleased, but well aware now with the run of games we have, how important it was to win on Saturday ahead of what is a tricky run of fixtures.”
