New waste station plan given green light

-

PLANNING chiefs gave the green light for plans to build a waste station in Widnes processing up to 75,000 tonnes a year despite receiving advice about potential “odour” issues.

Halton Borough Council’s development management committee granted approval to ASH Land Widnes Ltd’s project on January 18.

The go-ahead means the company can build the processing facility on existing industrial premises on MacDermott Road in Widnes.

The works include a mix of conversion and fresh construction works.

A Halton Council report said the facility will store and sort “non-hazardous wastes”, mainly mixed packaging such as paper, cardboard, glass and “general trade waste” such as construction and demolition materials.

Most of the matter will be collected from businesses across the Liverpool City Region and work will involve separating recyclables.

The report said the council’s major projects officer had advised that the proposal is close to a fresh food facility and there is a “likelihood that the facility will omit odour, dust (or) ash, rubbish as the waste is being transported to the facility and generally cause a nuisance”.

There were no objections lodged before the decision meeting.
