Giant warehouse set for go-ahead on wasteland
PLANNING chiefs are poised to give the go-ahead for a huge warehouse to be built on wasteland in Widnes.
The Madog Estates Ltd project would have 19,105 square metres of floor space, occupying 4.9 hectares of vacant brownfield land at Viking Park and accessed via Mathieson Road and close to other industrial and freight sites such as Stobart and the Tesco distribution centre.
A Halton Borough Council report published ahead of an upcoming development management committee meeting on March 2 at Runcorn Town Hall said there have been no objections or other representations over the proposals.
It said the land has been identified as a “regional investment site” in the Halton Unitary Development Plan.
If approved, the facility would feature a storage and distribution building with offices, a service yard, and parking for cars and lorries.
It would measure 214 metres in length by 87m and would have a maximum height of just under 18m.
As part of the consultation process, comment was sought from the Merseyside Environmental Advisory Service, which said that proper conditions would ensure “no adverse effect upon the integrity” of nearby wildlife sites and areas of special scientific interest.
In addition, Natural England had no objection and said the suggested mitigation for loss of greenery was “acceptable”.
The project has therefore been recommended for approval, subject to conditions.
