Weather comes to the aid of Linnets’ rivals
RUNCORN Linnets Ladies and Macclesfield FC will have to battle it out again next week after their second round Cheshire County Cup game was abandoned at half time at the Leasing.com Stadium with the pitch holding too much surface water.
Macclesfield took the game to the Linnets and opened the scoring on seven minutes after a mistake in the visitors defence.
The home side`s lead was short lived as Lucy Wieland was upended in the penalty box and Chelsea Gillies made no mistake from the spot.
The conditions began to deteriorate and the ball began to hold up in the goal that the home side were defending. Becky Barker put a tremendous shot just over the bar on 19 minutes before the home side were reduced to 10 players after an incident on the far side.
Ellie Dyson, working well down the right, fed Lile Ashley whose shot just cleared the Macclesfield woodwork on the half hour.
Then after a succession of corners the Linnets increased their lead on 35 minutes Emma Mclarney poking through a crowded goalmouth. Macclesfield although down to 10 were still dangerous on the break and Runcorn had to be wary.
