CGI image of Brindley expansion revealed
HALTON Borough Council has released an image showing how it envisages The Brindley in Runcorn to look following a “spectacular” redesign.
The CGI art shows a completely revamped reimagining of the proposals, showing the integrated library inside, high ceilings, glass frontage and landscaping and lighting on the approaching steps to the theatre.
The £6.6m “enhancement” proposal includes an extension to accommodate a combined caferestaurant and “community space” outside on “Brindley Green”.
Consultants led by Arcadis and featuring input from Ellis Williams Architects in Preston Brook have developed the design in response to updated plans to integrate the area’s library into the theatre.
A Halton Council spokeswoman said it shows a “marked difference” with the initial concept released in 2020.
It is hoped bringing the library into the theatre will attract more visitors.
The architect behind the updated design presented their work to the Runcorn Town Deal Board at a recent meeting, where it was reported to have been “well received”.
Cllr Paul Nolan (employment, learning and skills, leisure, community and culture) said: “Since it opened its doors in 2004, The Brindley has become a muchloved venue and landmark for Runcorn, drawing high-profile national and international performers who attract visitors from across the region and beyond.
“These designs, which complement the iconic design of the current building, will see The Brindley welcoming even more people and being the catalyst to creating a flourishing cultural hub that will be a boost to the town centre economy.”
Cllr Norman Plumpton-Walsh, ward councillor and Runcorn Town Deal Board member, said: “The proposed accessible Brindley Green will offer new open spaces for local people to enjoy right in the heart of the town centre.
“In addition, we hope that independent businesses on the high street will benefit from the increased volumes of visitors enjoying the enhanced facilities.”
The Brindley redevelopment is one of seven projects being spearheaded under the £23.6m Town Deal investment from the
Government.
A business case is due to be submitted this summer, which will be scrutinised by Whitehall and awarded funding if accepted.
The council said a planning application could be submitted this summer.
