Increase in collisions involving children

- BY OLIVER CLAY

THE number of serious road collisions involving children in Halton increased in 2020 against the backdrop of an overall downward trend in the borough.

A report published by Halton Borough Council ahead of this month’s environment and urban policy board said there were four minors killed or seriously injured (KSI) on the roads in 2020, up 100% from the year before – indicating there were two in 2019.

In addition, there was a 29% reduction in children slightly injured in Halton.

Overall, there was a “sharp decline” in the number of crashes resulting in injury involving all ages from 2019 following an increase the previous year.

The report said there were 159 road traffic collisions (RTCs) with injury in 2020, down by 24 from 2019.

The number of casualties also dropped, by 27%, to 181.

There were 22 KSI casualties in 2020, down from 31 the year before, which the report said
