Rent charges at Runcorn Shopping City revealed

- BY OLIVER CLAY

A BROCHURE published by retail letting agents has shed light on how much it costs to rent store space at Runcorn Shopping City.

The document, released by Manchester-based Cheetham & Mortimer, gives a indication of what aspiring retailers would have to cover as a baseline overhead to build a sustainable business model.

According to the brochure, published in January, there were 17 units available to rent, ranging in size from 466sqft from next door to Max Spielmann and 951sqft between Handy Jack’s and Mullens Opticians, for £15,000-a -year, up to 38,175sqft for the vacant unit next door to Costa, price on arrangement.

The next largest available space is 5,756sqft priced at £40,000-a-year.

Other units are available from £15,000-a-year to £35,000 Prices exclude VAT, business rates, service charge and insurance.

To break even, a fledgling business would have to generate revenue at a bare minimum of £41 on average per day a year including weekends and Bank Holidays to cover rent not including any other costs.

Shopping City turns 50 this year and its fluctuating fortunes are well known, but it remains host to household names including Costa, Argos, JD Sport, Iceland, Poundland, Wilko, Boots, Sayers, Greggs and Specsavers plus independent traders.

The centre also has a shared micro-business incubator called The Box.

Other upcoming developments include a rooftop garden in one of the car parks, refurbished units to accommodate hospital services and wider improvements to pedestrian access.

According to Land Registry documents, it has been owned by Guernsey-based Runcorn One Ltd since June 2011.
