McDonnell departs for Macclesfield Recently arrived frontman ‘couldn’t turn down’ offer
STRIKER Bobbie McDonnell has left the club to join North West Counties League Premier Division leaders Macclesfield.
The frontman only signed from Alsager Town last month and made four appearances, scoring once on his debut against Barnoldswick Town.
McDonnell, 21, hopes it’s a significant step towards his ambition of turning professional.
“I signed for Runcorn Town recently but this was an offer I couldn’t really turn down,” he said.
“I feel like I could go a lot higher in the leagues if I’m honest and hopefully be a professional footballer.”
Meanwhile, Town picked up a useful point with a goalless draw at Northwich Victoria on Saturday.
Both sides had chances early in the game. On 11 minutes Vics’ Matty Birchall had a shot deflected wide. Town responded with a shot from Bobbie McDonnell’s which was comfortable for the keeper.
Midway through the half Brad Lynch was put through one on one with Adam Reid, but he took too long to shoot and the Town number 1 was able to make the save.
Both sides were reduced to 10 men on 32 minutes when Town’s Richie Foulkes and Vics’ Luke
Sephton were both sent off following an off the ball incident.
After a first half with few clear chances, both sides should have found the net after the break.
For Town Niall Fallon headed wide from a corner and Joe Holt and Sam Hughes both had shots over the bar.
For Vics Christian Mather headed against bar and the ball fell to Matt Dudley who fired over from close range.
Fallon had another header saved by the keeper, as did Tom Ruffer whose header brought a fantastic save from Chris Cheetham as Town pushed for a winner.
The home side finished the game on top though and in injury time the Town defence had to be at their best to block shots from Birchall and Liam Martin.
The result leaves Town ten points from safety ahead of Saturday’s trip to Burscough.
