BREXIT A SHAMEFUL, COSTLY FAILURE
IT’S not been a good week for Brexit.
We’ve seen the unsettling spectacle of some Leave voters from 2016 taking to their keyboards to complain about ‘more foreigners coming over here’ from Ukraine, after those from Afghanistan and Syria.
They seem to have conveniently forgotten that Putin got what he wanted in Brexit, which played a role in emboldening him in his brutal geopolitical gaming and aggression.
Then we’ve had the debacle of the P&O sackings. Interestingly no P&O workers in France in what some on the ‘left’ see as the ‘neoliberal EU’ were let go in a video message and removed by private security guards from their place of work!
Spare a thought too for the seafarers losing their jobs who are represented by the Brexit-backing RMT union!
The RMT advised its members to vote leave to protect workers rights, the NHS and end austerity.
How is that working out? Are they going to apologise to their members?
And finally on Friday a Public Accounts Committee report provided the latest doubt that Brexit trade deals will bring any ‘actual economic benefits.’
Even the (Tory) deputy chair of the committee said the Department for International Trade was “really struggling to point to tangible wins for British business, consumers or our own agriculture sector” from its programme of negotiations.
You could go on, but it is too depressing.
But one thing is clear – Brexit is a shameful and costly failure.
