Nanocrystal firm is shaping tech’s future

-

AGLIMPSE of the future courtesy of a cutting-edge Daresbury tech company has left the area’s MP “blown away”.

Quantum Science Ltd’s research is currently developing sensor technology for the next generation of mobile phones, self-driving cars and even flying taxis, as it works with manufacturers including camera companies for the commercial launch of its patented light-sensitive nanocrystal products.

The firm recently showed off its wares with a tour of its lab at Sci-Tech Daresbury for Mike Amesbury, Labour MP for Weaver Vale.

A spokesman for Mr Amesbury’s office said Quantum Science is anticipating rapid expansion through its relationships with global brands but “hopes to stay local and recruit for highly skilled jobs”.

The MP said: “This is exciting, worldleading nanotechnology.

“Applications range from mobile phones to automated cars to health care, even flying taxis in the not too distant future.

“It’s taking things to another level.

“And we’ve got this facility on our doorstep that is growing rapidly and wants to grow even further.”

Quantum Science, which employs about 20 staff, said silicon-based sensor technology that has dominated the market until now lacks the “superior” infrared sensing ability of nanocrystal quantum dots developed at its Daresbury lab.

Applications could include sensors in self-driving cars but the firm predicts better performance and a lower cost.

Mobile phones could benefit from enhanced facial ID and biometrics recognition, improved camera performance and longer battery life.

The company also anticipates that smart watches could incorporate more health functions including real-time glucose monitoring, thereby avoiding intrusive blood testing for diabetes sufferers.

Other applications could include quality control in industry, such as detecting solar panel defects, or in retail such as mobile phones being used to scan fruit and veg in supermarkets for hidden flaws.

Dr Hao Pang, Quantum Science Ltd founder and chief executive, said: “We were very excited to host Mike’s visit.

“Gaining our MP’s support inspires us to innovate and deliver the best quantum dot products and tech to our global customers.

“Quantum Science looks forward to working with local communities to transform our North West materials innovation company into a global success.

“Quantum Science commits to bringing high-performance and lowcost infrared sensing and imaging to life, improving the way humans and machines perceive the world.”
