M56 crashes ‘not linked to roadworks’

- BY GARY PORTER

MOTORISTS faced lengthy delays due to a spate of crashes on a stretch of the M56.

But the Highways Agency says “there is absolutely no suggestion” that they are linked to the ongoing roadworks near Runcorn.

There has been heavy congestion on both sides of the carriageway over the past two weeks due to collisions, a lorry fire and emergency repairs.

On each occasion the incidents have occurred on, or close to, the stretch of roadworks between junctions 11 and 12.

“Important” work is currently being carried out to replace the bridge which carries the A533 over the motorway. A speed limit of 50mph is in place as a result.

It is hoped the replacement work will be completed by the end of the year.

A spokesman for National Highways said: “There is absolutely no suggestion that any recent incidents along the M56 are related to the important roadworks between junction 11 and 12 near Runcorn where we’re working to replace the bridge which carries the A533 over the motorway.

“The bridge provides a vital connection for communities and businesses in the area and we’re working to complete the replacement work before the end of the year.

“Until then, a 50mph speed limit along a short section of the motorway between junction 11 and junction 12 will remain in place in both directions for safety reasons.”
