Surgery refurb to accommodate pandemic

- BY OLIVER CLAY

RISKS of a future pandemic have been factored into plans to refurbish and expand a Runcorn GP surgery.

Under the proposals, Murdishaw Health Centre - also referred to as “Murdishaw Medical Centre” - would have more consulting rooms and admin space, and education room, in addition to an overhaul of the waiting and reception area.

A design and access statement (DAS) filed by Corstorphine & Wright architects said the project would also include the creation of a “pandemic secure clinical suite”, featuring “seven new clinical rooms” with a separate reception and toilets.

Other proposals include an increased number of parking and cycle spaces available.

The design statement said the facelift would improve patient privacy and dignity with the creation of an interview room, boost staff working conditions, and create the chance to provide wider services.

It said the “aesthetically pleasing extension” would be in keeping with the existing building and environment.

In conclusion the DAS said: “There is an established need for Murdishaw Medical Centre to expand.

“Extending their existing building will allow them to not only improve routine clinical services but also offer a wide range of integrated services for patients and the local community.

“The proposals are fully supported by the Clinical Commissioning Group and the surgeries’ Participation Groups.

“The enlarged site is large enough to support the building extension and new parking areas without adverse impacts on neighbouring properties.

“Furthermore, extending the existing building will be less disruptive to patients and staff than moving to a new building.”

Inspectors from the Care Quality Commission last completed a full inspection of the health centre in 2017, issuing a “good” rating.

A review on April 7 this year found no need for another assessment.

Public consultation over the expansion plan is open until May 5, with Halton Borough Council aiming to decide the matter by around June 1.
