Discount store may move to B&Q site

-

DISCOUNT retailer B&M appears to be lining up a bid to move into the former B&Q store in Widnes.

A planning application has been submitted asking Halton Borough Council for permission to expand the amount of floor space allowed to sell food and drink and to vary the types of goods for sale, from DIY equipment, pet products, clothes and camping gear to homeware and seasonal decorations.

The proposed store B&M Home Store would include the option of hosting a cafe.

A planning statement said the premises, at Widnes Trade Park on Earle Road, spans about 73,000 sq ft.

B&M’s existing premises nearby at Bowers Retail Park would shut if the plan goes ahead.

Staff would relocate, and 45 new jobs would be created, totalling about 75-85 full and part time roles.

A planning statement said B&M Retail had 656 outlets in 2019-20 generating annual revenues of £3.14bn and employing more than 28,000 staff.

Residents have until May 22 to comment with Halton Council aiming to decide the matter by about July 19.

Discount retailer The Range, which has occupied the premises since moving from Runcorn last February last year, has not commented on the plans and remains open.
