Rees-Mogg proves the remainers right
ON APRIL 28 we heard Jacob Rees-Mogg, the arch-leaver, declare that ‘free trade is hugely advantageous to consumers’ when he and his cronies have pulled this country out of the largest, most successful free trade bloc in the world – the European single market.
Enforcing Brexit checks on imports from Europe and implementing the promise to take back control of Britain’s borders ‘would have been an act of self harm’.
For what it’s worth ‘act of self harm’ was exactly the words used by the remain campaign.
British farmers, thanks to Brexit, have been left at a serious competitive disadvantage. They face costly checks exporting to our continental neighbours while the German, French, Spanish and Italian farmers face no such hassle moving their products in the other direction.
Over the last few years every British port has also made huge capital outlays in building the very facilities needed to establish those controls. A complete waste of money and effort.
The British Veterinary Association warns that Britain is now exposed to ‘catastrophic risk’ of animal diseases. A risk which was significantly reduced when we were part of the European Union’s highly responsive surveillance system.
Please can someone tell me what the advantages are of leaving the European Union? To me it is just a grievous example of self harm
