Under 16s make a fist of Leeds challenge

-

THE Wild Academy Under 16 team missed out on the chance of winning a post-season challenge series against league champions Leeds after they lost out 6-1 away in Yorkshire on Saturday.

Honours had been even in the home and away challenge after a 5-5 draw back in Widnes two weeks earlier and the Wild U16s, who have just finished the season in a highly creditable third place in the league were hoping to come home with a result against the hitherto unbeaten team.

Unfortunately, as it turned out, the match followed league form and Leeds ended up easy winners.

Widnes put up a good fight, however, and it took until the 10th minute of the game for the initial deadlock to be broken.

Unfortunately, Leeds scored two quick goals just 45 seconds apart and took a 2-0 lead into the first period break.

Two more unanswered Leeds goals followed in the second period but Widnes finally broke their duck at the start of the third with a strike from Cody Ogden on 32 minutes.

Any hopes of a late Wild comeback were dashed, however, as Leeds scored again three minutes later and added their sixth and final goal on 43 minutes.

The Wild Academy Under 16 team play their final game of the season – a challenge match against Sheffield U16s - this Saturday 14th May at Planet Ice Widnes, 3.20pm face off.
