- BY OLIVER CLAY

A WOMAN was rescued from a car after it hit a lamp-post in Runcorn.

Cheshire Police said the casualty was taken to Warrington Hospital by ambulance with bleeding but not life-threatening injuries after the incident was reported at 8.46am on Thursday.

The collision happened on the exit slip from Bridgewater Junction to Halton Brow.

A police spokesman said the incident involved a Vauxhall Astra and no-one else was in the vehicle, which had “gone over the embankment” and “hit a lamp post”.

There were reports the casualty was “trapped” and remained conscious.

When the Weekly News attended the scene, the exit slip was blocked at the top and a cordon was also in place on the neighbouring street Castlefields Avenue North.

Emergency services were at the scene including a fire engine and ambulance plus highways staff.

The badly crumpled bonnet was visible close to the lamp post, which was leaning over the road.

Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service (CFRS) deployed two appliances - one each from

Runcorn and Widnes.

A CFRS spokesperson said: “The crew removed the person from the vehicle and handed them to the care of paramedics.

“Police and Highways Agency also attended to close the road while the incident was being dealt with.”

A North West Ambulance Service spokesperson said: “A woman was extracted from the vehicle and taken to hospital. She wasn’t seriously injured.”
