Battery may have sparked lorry fire

- BY OLIVER CLAY

A BATTERY that was thrown away with general rubbish is believed to have caused a bin lorry fire in Widnes.

Halton Borough Council released a picture of the smouldering wagon as it urged residents to properly dispose of batteries by visiting the nearest household waste and recycling centre or battery recycling point.

A spokesman for the local authority said residents should avoid throwing batteries away via their household recycling or general waste bins.

Halton Council said a battery was believed to have been the cause.

The fire happened on April 22 and was discovered while the vehicle was passing through Chestnut Lodge.

Stef Nelson (environment and urban renewal) said: “Experience from around the UK shows the dangers of batteries in your household bins.

“This could have been a lot worse, if refuse collectors and fire officers hadn’t acted so quickly.”
