Petition launched over escalators at retail park
BROKEN escalators at a Runcorn retail park have been out of action for so long it has sparked an online petition.
Weaver Vale MP Mike Amesbury and Halton Lea councillor Kath Loftus are campaigning for Trident Retail Park owners to fix the up and down escalators just inside the covered entrance.
Both have received complaints from members of the public fed up with the escalators being out of order for several months.
There are lifts but these are extremely busy, with reports of intermittent faults.
Mr Amesbury, who recently contacted park owners Kennedy Wilson and managing agents Savills without response, said: “It’s absolutely ridiculous we’ve had to start this petition as you’d imagine the owners would want to create the right impression at their retail park.
“But access is more difficult than it should be to the adjoining Shopping City for stores and coffee shops as well as public transport plus key services like the NHS health hub, the job centre and CAB.
“Clearly, some elderly customers, disabled people and parents with pushchairs can’t manage the stairs. And from what I gather the lifts are extremely busy and are not always working.”
Cllr Loftus, whose Halton Lea ward includes Trident, is keen to see the escalators fixed without delay.
She said: “I have been contacted online and other people have spoken to me in Shopping City.
“I have talked to the security guys for Trident Park who say they’ve reported the issues to the owner, but apparently to no avail.
“Come on Kennedy Wilson, people with mobility issues and disabilities are fed up of feeling like second class citizens.
“You must surely be embarrassed at this situation.
“Please do the right thing by your customers and get this sorted as soon as possible.”
