Looking to freshen up your training? Train by time, rather than distance, says ultrarunner and coach Robbie Britton (robbiebritton.co.uk). ‘Not all miles are created equal and training by distance fails to take this into account,’ he says. When you train by time, it doesn’t matter if your route is muddy or you’ve had a tough time at work – once you’ve completed the time, you’re done. ‘A 10-miler on a good day, on a flat surface, will take a lot less time and effort than a 10-miler on a dark, wet night,’ says Britton. ‘But a 60-minute easy run can mean the same thing across a variety of terrains and conditions, even if the distance covered will vary.’
