Middle-aged women trying to reduce body mass may be best focusing on HIIT training (high-intensity interval training) rather than lower-intensity continuous training. A study2 of 45 previously inactive women found that 12 weeks of HIIT and continuous training produced similar results in terms of improving cardiovasc­ular fitness and resting heart rate, but only HIIT training reduced total body mass. However, only continuous training was effective in improving mental wellbeing.
