JACQUIE MILLETT AND CAMILLA LANGLANDS
64 AND 30, WEST LONDON, MOTHER- AND- DAUGHTER MARATHONERS
WHEN MOTHER AND DAUGHTER Jacquie Millett and Camilla Langlands crossed the finish line at last year’s New York City Marathon, they set a new world record, as the first mother and daughter to finish 100 marathons together.
What’s even more remarkable is that Jacquie only took up running at 57. ‘I decided if I didn’t do it now, it would never happen,’ she says.
During the early years, Camilla was content to watch from the sidelines. ‘I thought what mum was doing was incredible, but that there was absolutely no way I’d ever run a marathon.’
Fast forward seven years, and mother and daughter have each run well over 100 marathons. ‘I got into running when my world was shrinking,’ says Jacquie. ‘I’d recently retired and a lot of my friends had moved away. Running opened up a whole new world for me.
‘I would seriously encourage anyone who is considering running to just start,’ adds Camilla. ‘It has completely changed our lives in the past four or five years. We’ve made so many friends and visited so many places. Our relationship has developed, too – and it’s all because of running.’
