Mind + Health
When it comes to boosting mental and physical health, runners are better together. Here are three compelling reasons to run with others
Why it’s good to run with others
YOU’LL BE HAPPIER YOU’LL STICK TO YOUR GOALS YOU’LL BE LESS STRESSED
A recent poll conducted by England Athletics has found that 89 per cent of runners feel greater levels of happiness as a direct result of running in a group. Commenting on the findings, Matt Birkett, head of participation at England Athletics, said: ‘At a time when mental health is such a key concern for society, it’s great to formally acknowledge that simply running with others can make such a significant difference to happiness and emotional wellbeing. Even being part of an online community can help your running, according to a recent study1. It found that virtual support communities (VSC) such as Strava and Facebook can be useful motivational tools in helping you to stick to a plan. Researchers tracked two weight-loss groups over four years and found that participation in a VSC where individuals shared both successes and setbacks was effective in helping people work towards their goals. As well as helping you achieve your fitness goals, exercising with others chills you out and adds to your quality of life. A recent study published in The Journal of the American Osteopathic Association revealed that twice-weekly group exercise lowered stress levels by 26.2 per cent and boosted quality of life scores by 24.8 per cent. Researchers believe the camaraderie of group fitness is the single most important factor in enhancing quality of life.
