whether this new IT WAS A TOSS- UP model from New Balance would win Best Debut or Editor’s Choice, but it thoroughly deserved the top prize. The bootie construction, 6mm heel drop, nitrogen-infused forefoot (which provides durability and bounce for less weight) and narrow last all combined to make a shoe that is about speed. Our testers raved about how light, responsive, fast and snug it was. This makes sense, since the RW Lab also rated the Impulse as among the least flexible and least cushioned on test – so if you’re a steady-pace distance runner only, this won’t be a comfortable option for you. But for races of 10K and under, this is a superb addition to the speedster fold.

REALLY COMFORTABLE. I’M QUITE HEAVY- FOOTED AND WORRIED THERE WOULD NOT BE ENOUGH CUSHIONING, BUT I WAS WRONG” JAMES DAY, 33
