This 12km multi-terrain race – which is started by the sharp sound of a firework – has a couple of tasty climbs, some fast canal-side running, plenty of mud and a – usually frigid – river crossing. MENDIP MUDDLE

Held over 12 miles of the lumpiest Mendip Hills, there are 420m of climb and some of the finest scenery in the West Country. Survive mud, mud, more mud and some very cold water in this handsome corner of the Wiltshire Cotswolds on a hilly nine-mile route.
