Runner's World (UK)

EDITOR’S LETTER

-

IT STANDS TO REASON that runners should be more environmentally conscious than most people – much of the appeal of the sport is being outside and enjoying nature. So, with the world in the grip of a climate emergency, we wanted to ask if there is anything we can do to try to help the situation (rather than watch the alarming weather events and scientific statistics stack up with a feeling of resigned impotence). The results are in this special Green Issue.

The good news is that even little things, when done by many, can have a big impact. On an individual level, that could be run commuting, plogging (page 40) or making more informed eating choices (page 54). The running industry is also starting to do its bit, so we look at how races (page 46) and shoes (page 32) are getting greener. On page 60, we tip our hats to the eco heroes who are setting the example when it comes to positive environmental action.

To assure you that we’re trying to practise what we preach, this magazine’s paper is from certified sustainable forest sources and subscriber copies are now sent out in paper envelopes rather than plastic bags (as, indeed, are all Hearst UK’s magazines).

We talk a lot about the positive power of running – just imagine how incredible it would be if, together, we helped to change a troubled world for the better. Are you in?
