TRY A LITTLE TENDERNESS
I wanted to voice this as an issue
I’ve experienced, in the hope it brings a level of understanding among the running community. I have had anxiety, confidence issues and depression for years, and find running really helps to lift my mood. Until February 2019, I’d been running with a local club. I find being around others challenging and experienced frequent panic attacks midrun with groups. I was too ashamed to say what was happening, so they weren’t always aware and often said it was down to me not being fit enough, or that I was ‘my own worst enemy’. What I would hope is that this issue was met with kindness. I’m thinking about going back to the club again soon, reluctant to give in. In the meantime, I would like to raise awareness that kindness should always prevail, especially to those who are struggling.
