‘Any fool can make a rule, and any fool will mind it,’ wrote Henry
David Thoreau. Life has taught me that we need to be careful of the rules we obey. When I was growing up, there seemed to be a rule that people who weren’t gifted runners should be spectators, not participants.
And back in 1967 there was a rule that women couldn’t run marathons. I shudder to think how my life would’ve turned out if I hadn’t decided to break the former and Kathrine Switzer had decided to heed the latter.
