more watch than THIS MAY BE most runners need. It’s packed with sensors – GPS, heart rate, altimeter, barometer and compass – and has all the features you could want; from adaptive training plans and race-pacing guidance to Strava live segments and real-time performance assessments. But you also pay for ramped-up durability and a bucketload of outdoor and multisport features better suited to adventures and triathlons.

If you run ultras, the other big draw is battery life. The Fenix 6 delivers 36 hours of runtime in standard GPS mode, but you can switch that up to 72 hours in max battery mode, at the cost of some GPS accuracy.

The watch’s analytics and recommendations are beyond comprehensive – VO2 max, recovery times, aerobic and anaerobic training effect from every session, training load and recovery-time monitoring.

If you take your runs offroad, features such as topographic mapping and the ability to upload routes to your watch will also appeal. Smartwatch features include contactless payments and smartphone notifications, plus storage for 2,000 songs and Spotify syncing for phone-free tunes.
