‘I learned that courage was not the absence of fear, but the triumph over it. The brave man is not he who does not feel afraid, but he who conquers that fear.’

These words, spoken by my compatriot Nelson Mandela, inspired me to enter the Comrades Marathon, the scariest thing I’ve ever attempted, because I had to speed up dramatical­ly even to qualify. I was terrified at the thought of running 56 miles and that all my doubters would be proved right, but I conquered those fears and now I have two Comrades medals to my name.
