Running requires more grey matter than one might think. Researcher­s1 scanned the brains of 11 runners and 11 inactive people; the runners’ brains showed greater interconne­cted activity than those of the sedentary subjects. Why? ‘It [running] requires complex navigation­al skills... while continuing with all of the sequential motor activities of running,’ says study co-lead Gene E Alexander. In short, it’s a workout.
