Family and friends shed tears for tragic Jodie

- Staff reporter

Tributes have poured in for Jodie Muir, the teenager who tragically died at a party in Rutherglen at the weekend.

The 16-year-old from Shettleston posted a picture on her Instagram page last Friday saying she was “buzzin’ ” to be going to a friend’s that evening.

The Eastbank Academy pupil fell ill whilst at a party on Friday evening and died a few hours later.

She was at the house party with around 40 to 50 other teenagers.

She returned home at around 5am on the Saturday morning and died within her home several hours later.

It is still unclear whether or not the teenager died as a result of taking drugs or from natural causes and further tests are being carried out in order to establish the exact cause of her death.

It has been suggested that tragic Jodie may have taken a form of ecstasy at the party.

However the school girl’s aunt urged people not to jump to conclusions and claimed she could have died from a hereditary heart condition.

Linda McArthur defended Jodie in response to harsh public comments posted on Police Scotland’s official Facebook page.

She wrote: “I’m her aunt, and she passed away nothing has been proven yet we have a heart condition in the family so if u can’t send ur condolences then keep ur comment to yourself.”

Chief Superintendent Ciorstan Shearer of Police Scotland said: “My sympathies are with the girl’s family and we have specially trained officers providing assistance and support to them at this sad time.

“I would urge anyone who was at this party and has taken drugs and is feeling unwell, or knows of someone who took drugs at the party to attend or contact their local hospital for treatment or advice.

“I also urge anyone who was at the party to contact police at London Road Police Office via telephone number 101 as a matter of urgency so that we can confirm their safety and establish the circumstances in which the 16-year-old girl became unwell.”

Tributes on Jodie’s Instagram page included shannenkayyy who wrote: “Rest in peace sweetheart too gorgeous! Taken too young. Sleep tight x x x”.
