Work could start next year on Hoover site
One of the developers of the former Hoover site hopes that work, which could create over 1000 jobs, will finally begin next year.
The Reformer revealed in October 2011 that Forrest Developments Ltd and the Dawn Group had drawn up the £65 million plans for a Sainsbury’s supermarket, new retails units, 208 new homes, and a park and ride facility for Cambuslang train station, which was later granted outline permission.
It is hoped that the supermarket alone could create around 300 jobs, and the construction of it could provide a further 380 jobs.
The developers hoped that the scheme could create up to 1050 jobs in total, before, during and after the construction phase.
Outline planning permission was granted for the plans in March the following year, but before work can begin, a detailed planning application has to be granted by South Lanarkshire Council.
Russell Stewart, from Dawn Developments, is behind the residential aspect of the proposal.
He said: “We are still working towards a satisfactory start with regards to the site, which is getting ever closer.
“We now have the outline planning consent in place, and we’re now working on detailed planning permission for the house starts, and hopefully, with a fair wind and the other developments, it will be soon. It’s not likely to be this year, but more likely going to be in 2015.”
Mr Stewart confirmed that the application for housing would be in tandem with the retail development.
Keith Vallance, of the Forrest Group, who responsible for the retail element of the plans, was unavailable for comment.
MP Tom Greatrex said: “The likelihood of development of the former Hoover site is something which many residents of Cambuslang have contacted me about in the last couple of years.
“While any application would be rightly subjected to the consideration of the planning committee and representations from the public, seeing a part of Cambuslang which has, for a long time, lain fallow, it’s something that could bring a real economic benefit in terms of construction jobs and also in the future.
“Like many others in Cambuslang, the uncertainty of the development is something I would like clarified as soon as possible.”
