Lessons were a recipe for success

- Jonathan Geddes

Cathkin Primary pupils were quick to whip up some tasty treats recently.

The school was visited for four days by a ‘cookery bus’, an initiative that aims to help youngsters learn about healthy food that they can cook themselves.

And last week’s visit to Cathkin went down well with the kids.

Principal teacher Martin Frame thought the visit had several benefits for the pupils.

He said: “We had groups from primary four to primary seven going on the bus and when they were on they got to cook different food that they could then take away with them, from tea scones to fish pies. They were also given various recipe cards that they could take away with them, and use in the future.

“The pupils really enjoyed it and have all spoken highly of it since the visit.

“It’s important that they know of alternatives to their food, so that they know they can take less salt and less sugar in their diet, and things like that.

The school is planning to continue its healthy eating initiatives over the coming months too.

Martin added: “Susan and Jemima from the bus also ran sessions after school for staff, so that we could look at what to do next, as we’ll be advancing it in the classes.

“We want to get the primary ones to primary threes involved as we go along, and have the older classes helping out, and teaching the younger pupils more about healthy alternatives.”

The school was also given a Cookit, which is a set of high quality cooking equipment and can be used for future lessons in the school.

The cookery bus initiative is funded by the Scottish Government and Food Standards Agency Scotland.

Cathkin Primary thanked all the parents who supported the event, and Susan and Jemima from the bus for their expertise. They said it was the best turnout of parent helpers to date.
