Insightful comedy about the care system

- Andrea O’neill

A comedy drama about residents, families and carers up against age, authority and each other is set to enthrall audiences countywide.

‘Nothing Personal’ sees Mrs Lees move into Lady Beeswax sheltered housing complex and quickly discovers the realities don’t match the brochure.

Between guilt-tripping family, meddling neighbours, a multitude of carers, and a warden who’s seen it all before, challenging times lie ahead!

Shuga Koated’s first production ‘Mrs Lees and her Ladies’ introduced Mrs Lees as the feisty lead character whose wit and tenacity delighted its sell out audience at an exclusive performance in the Oran Mor last year.

‘Nothing Personal’ is the continuation of Mrs Lees journey as she makes the reluctant transition to a sheltered housing complex; still fighting to keep her independence, and up against ever more new characters hell bent on doing her good.

Shuga Koated is a new locallybased independent production company with a remit to produce original comedy and drama that increases female roles, inclusive of age. ‘Nothing Personal’ addresses both in a timely and topical look at assisted living.

The play itself was a labour of love for East Kilbride independent writer and producer Linda Campbell, who drew from the real life antics of her mother’s experiences in the care system in her hometown to pen and produce an original 60-minute play and single film, introducing audiences to central character Mrs Lees in Mrs Lees and her Ladies.

And, she used the film to gain feedback from a wide demographic of families and carers to develop the play, as a 90-minute comedy drama continuing the journey of Mrs Lees as she enters sheltered housing only to find it’s not what she thought it would be.

A proactive screenwriter, Linda previously founded and spearheaded a group in Glasgow for five years, ‘Write, Camera, Action!’ which united actors and writers from across Scotland at the CCA in Glasgow, and increased independent production of original work in Scotland, before taking the plunge at 50 to launch her own production company Shuga Koated in 2012.

‘Nothing Personal’ comes to Hamilton Townhouse on October and East Kilbride Arts Centre on October 4. Tickets are priced £10 evening and £8 matinee only.
