Glens go in for the Kil

- Peter Ferguson

Glencairn maintained their unbeaten start to the season but it wasn’t a classic performance from the Rutherglen men.

There were no changes to the Glens starting line-up from the side that came back from Largs the week before with a 1-0 victory.

Glens thought they had taken the lead in the sixth minute when Paul Thomson knocked the ball home from two yards, but he was flagged offside.

New signing Jamie Gilmartin nodded wide before Duke saved a header from the same player.

Hutchison had to be alert to race from his line and block from Prentice.

Glens finally took the lead in the 28th minute. Esplin lifted a free kick towards the six yard box and Steven McClung was left unmarked to stop and nod the ball home.

The same players combined moments later but this time the header went wide.

Kilsyth appeared for the second half with more purpose and Hutchison made decent saves from Prentice and Duffy.

Esplin had a sight of goal when Duke could only palm Gilmartin’s long throw into his path, but Kilsyth managed to block the effort.

Glens finally gave themselves some breathing space midway through the half. Gilmartin controlled Ballantyne’s low cross before turning and firing home.

The home side looked to kill the game off, but spurned a number of chances and Kilsyth were handed a lifeline with 15 minutes left when Bishop upended Duffy in the box. The same played dusted himself down to score the penalty.

But the Rutherglen men held on to pick up their second league win of the season.
