Last Saturday, Cambuslang welcomed St Duthus BC from Tain in the north of Scotland.

St Duthus BC visited various clubs in the area, travelling with 42 people and Cambuslang were delighted to welcome them to the club, where they enjoyed a six rinks mixed bowls match followed by a meal and club cabaret.

HALFWAY AND DISTRICT

Last Saturday saw the Newton Cup 2+2 rinks take place at Halfway and District. The tournament was sponsored by the Lynn and Bilsland families.

The weather was again kind and eventual winners were Halfway’s Charlie McIntyre, Gordon Shanks and Cambuslang’s Ralph Caldwell and Jim Lindsay.

They defeated Martin McIlree’s team that consisted of John Law, Pat Gallagher and Eddie McCormack.

This Saturday sees another popular tourney take place. The Dalton Cup Triples is sponsored by the Fergus and O’Neil families and has a 9.30am for 10am start. Sixteen teams will battle it out for the trophy.

The last remaining final was played last Wednesday night when the ladies senior pairs was played for. Bernadette Sheppard and Helen Torrance beat Sandra Hughes and Fiona Firth.

KINGSWOOD

Last week was again full of mixed fortunes for Kingswood.

On Wednesday morning the Cambuslang and District senior teams finished the league very positively by winning both games against Kirkhill. Perhaps the new selector and sometime player had an impact on the team.

However it was not so good later that day in the Top Five singles against Clarkston with only David McMonagle winning his game. Although three of the other four games were close, the Clarkston team played better on the night and thoroughly deserved their win.

On Thursday evening the ladies nominated pairs of Nikki Hutchinson and Rachel Magee won against Liz Wood and Cathy Gemmell. All four ladies played well, but Nikki and Rachel had the edge and ran out comfortable winners.

Last Saturday, five finals were played. Marjory Kyle made it a trio of wins by lifting the ladies Presidents Trophy against Nikki Hutchinson.

In the gents vice-president’s, Kennedy Greig fought well to level the match at 17 shots all against Brian Docherty, but Brian had too much in reserve and eventually won 21-17.

In the ladies balloted triples, Cathy Gemmell, Linda Hislop and Helen McGregor had a comfortable win against Cathy Reid, Betty Charleson and Ellice Gray and finally it was a similar result in the gents fours when Bill McMillan, Ian Kyle, Willie Graham and Iain Gillies beat Neil Lynn, Lee McElveen, Frank Lang and Brian Holland 22-11.

Earlier the same day the two bowl triples was won by David McMonagle and Willie Rankin by two sets to zero against Alan Brown and David Hutchinson.

Finally, on Sunday the gents’ under45 singles title was contested by club champion David Hutchinson and Jamie Sinclair, in his first year at Kingswood, and what a match it turned out to be.

Jamie scored first then David and so on it went throughout the game. The lead changed on numerous occasions and the bowls were wonderful to watch. Late in the game with the score even David picked up a three to go 2017 up. However Jamie was not for giving up and squared the match at 20 shots all. In the final end Jamie played his first bowl within four inches at a full length jack and this was to be the deciding shot to win the trophy in his first year at Kingswood.

Also played was the mixed pairs final between Heather McGregor and Andy Boag against holders Chris and Brian Holland. Again this was a very close battle with the lead changing a few times. The holders were one up with two ends to play, when Helen and Andy picked up a two to go one up, with one end to play.

Helen was lying two shots in the final end, but Brian managed to move it to claim two shots and the win.

OVERTOUN PARK

Memorial Day winners were May Stark, Betty Keenan, Myra Law and Hugh Lambie, with runners- up Alan Law, James Masterton, George Lappin and Jean Alexander.

All of the finalists donated their prize money to Cancer Research, as was proceeds of the club.

A club spokesman said: “It was a great day and a nice way to remember our lost friends.”
