New pub is really taking shape
Residents in Cambuslang have given their approval to the outside of the new Wetherspoon pub set to open next month.
The signage to the John Fairweather was added last week, and members of the Facebook group, All About Cambuslang, praised the building online.
One wrote:“It deserved a facelift, looks good,”while another said:“It looks fantastic compared to what it was just another eyesore in Cambuslang main st.”
However, there were some concerns from locals about the future of other pubs in the town.
One wrote:“Looks good and will no doubt be a good asset to the Cambuslang overall but can’t help wondering what its impact will have on the small local pubs in the locality.”
The pub will open in the old Savoy cinema which later became a bingo hall on Main Street. In a nod to the building’s history, Wetherspoon’s have kept the word“Savoy”at the very top.
John Fairweather was the architect who designed the C-listed building, which opened in 1929. The pub project represents a £2million investment from Wetherspoon, who have also been advertising for staff.
Wetherspoon spokesman Eddie Gershon said:“Our new pub in Cambuslang opens on January 20.
“We are looking forward to opening the pub and are confident it will prove popular with people in the town and also be a good addition to its social scene.”
