Characters are in Barry’s sights

Bully Wee boss wants more spirit in side

- Will Henshaw

Clyde boss Barry Ferguson has said he will look to get players in who have the “right character” for the club in Janaury.

The former Rangers captain was speaking to the Reformer following his side’s 4-0 defeat to Berwick Rangers at Shielfield.

Although Clyde started the game well, they fell behind following an Andrew Russell strike for the home side. The Clyde players seemed to lose heart after that, as Berwick went on to score three more to compound the Bully Wee’s misery.

Barry says he knows what he has to do to change the fortunes of his team, who have lost their last three games on the trot.

He said: “There’s only one way I can and that’s to bring in new players in January. I have good players just now, there’s no doubt about that, but I need to get guys in who have the right sort of character.

“I need guys who can pull the team together and be leaders on the pitch. That’s what I need to do to change things.”

Speaking of the 4-0 league defeat, he added: “I’m obviously very disappointed in the result. We started the game really well but once we went a goal behind we seemed to collapse, which is what we’ve done in quite a few games.

“If we don’t score within the first 20 minutes it’s a problem for us. We don’t take advantage when we’re on top then they go and score from their first attempt on goal. Our heads went down which is disappointing. We need a bit of mental toughness to be quite honest with you.”

Barry will hope to snap his team out of this slump when they take on Albion Rovers at Broadwood on Saturday.

He added: “We need to try and break out of it. I’ve tried to change the system to suit the players.

“I can only do so much on the training ground. They’ve got to take it on to the park. I can only guide them off the park when I’m in training. It’s up to them to take it on to the pitch, which we’ve not been doing the last few weeks.”
