- Kenny Smith

Cambuslang’s legendary singer/songwriter Midge Ure is returning to South Lanarkshire later this year.

The co-writer of Band Aid’s Do They Know It’s Christmas will be performing in Hamilton as part of South Lanarkshire Leisure and Culture’s annual Young At Heart festival in March.

Midge (61) will also give a talk about his musical career, which has spanned five decades.

In the second half, he performs an acoustic set of his favourite music accompanied by two musicians from India Electric Company, Cole Stacey and Joseph O’Keefe.

As a musician and singersongwriter, Midge Ure enjoyed particular success in the 1970s and 1980s in bands including Slik, Thin Lizzy, Rich Kids, and Visage, and most notably as frontman of Ultravox.

In 1984, he co- wrote and produced the charity single Do They Know It’s Christmas?, which has sold 3.7 million copies in the UK. He was also involved in the 2004 and 2014 versions.

Midge co- organised Band Aid, Live Aid and Live 8 with Bob Geldof, and is also a trustee and ambassador for Save the Children.

Benny Martin, South Lanarkshire Leisure and Culture’s cultural services manager said: “As the finale to South Lanarkshire Leisure and Culture’s Young at Heart 2015 festival, at 7.30pm on Saturday March 21 in Hamilton Town House, world-acclaimed singer-songwriter Midge Ure will first be in conversation with music journalist Billy Sloan about his life growing up in Cambuslang; his work for charity; his appearance on Celebrity Masterchef; and throughout, his continuing love of music.

“Midge will then perform a selection of his favourite music with his two-piece acoustic band recreating the Celtic feel of his recent album, Breathe Again.”

His visit to South Lanarkshire is a stop- off during what will be a busy start to 2014 for the musician.

Before he performs in Hamilton, Midge will spend Januar y, February and early March touring Canada and the USA. Then in April, Midge will be performing four solo acoustic shows in New Zealand.

When he returns home, Midge will continue with a tour, Breathe Again, which starts in Scotland in March 2015, and continues in May, June, and late September – mid October throughout the UK.

Tickets for the gig in Hamilton are selling fast and are available from www.sllcboxoffice.co.uk/ or by calling 01698 452299.

The tickets are priced £15 each, and the show starts at 7.30pm.
