Calderwood Primary pupils are in a class of their own

Busy time for pupils in the run up to Christmas

- Kenny Smith

Calderwood Primary School has been busy with building before the festive break.

A team of children attended the Glasgow Science Centre to compete against schools across Scotland for the First Lego League Championship.

Last year Calderwood were the Scottish champions, and for 2014 came in fourth place at the West of Scotland heats. They were the top primary school which in itself was a huge achievement.

The First Lego League challenges children to think like scientists and engineers.

Teams were involved in building, testing, and programming an autonomous robot using Lego Mindstorms to solve a set of missions in the robot game. They also chose and solved a real-world question as part of the project.

Calderwood’s team was capably coached by class teacher Fiona Mossman and parent Malachy Devlin.

This year’s team was Callum Devlin, Leon Archibald, Misa Keen, Omair Hakeem, Aaron Gordon, Rory Beattie, Lewis Stevenson and Robbie Jamieson.

Meanwhile, Calderwood attended the Glasgow Bridgeton Burns Competition held at St Mungo’s High School. They did extremely well competing against many other schools from across Glasgow area. Their Burns results were:

P2/ 3 solo verse: 2, Kiera Mollins.

P4/ 5 solo singing: 1, Mya Wilson; 2, Mia McMaster; 3, May McKechnie.

P6/ 7 solo singing: 2, Kirsty Stewart.

Boys unbroken voice singing: 2, Jamie Banks.

Solo instrumental: 2, Bryony Somerville.

Best choir in the overall competition: P7, winning the Open Club Shield.

Singers and players: 3rd place

Pupils in Mrs Waddell’s primary four class have been busy too, as they have completed the Micro Tyco challenge.

After starting with just £ 1 each, the seven teams worked throughout the month of November to raise money through various activities, including: Selling stationery Holding a coffee morning in Templeton Bowling Club

Hosting a fun day for the whole school

Making and selling toast on Toasty Thursday

Holding a movie night for P5–7

Busking at the Christmas Fair Head teacher Lisa Quinn added: “They did extremely well. This is a huge undertaking for a teacher at this time of the year and Mrs Waddell should be commended for her commitment to the project.

“The children were amazing throughout and have thoroughly developed their entrepreneurial skills through team work, problem solving, resilience, creative ideas and enthusiasm.

“At the end of the challenge the class raised an incredible £ 1839.49 for the Wildhearts Foundation. This money will allow people in developing countries to apply for micro loans to start their own businesses.

“The children were delighted to be able to help this very worthwhile cause.”

Information about how their money will be used can be found at www.micro-tyco.com.
