Rutherglen Reformer

Rotarians round off

- Kenny Smith

The annual Rutherglen Rotary Club President’s Dinner was held recently at the Cathkin Golf Club.

This year’s club president, Bill Liggat, took great pleasure in welcoming the 60 plus guests, and introduced the members of his top table.

These were Robin Garside, president of Glasgow Rotary Club (mother club to Rutherglen) and his partner Tricia Chennell; Tom Nisbett, guest speaker for the evening, and his wife Lesley; Pat Bolton OBE, president of Rutherglen Inner Wheel and her husband Jim; and Robert Dickie, president of Cambuslang Rotary Club (sister club to Rutherglen).

President Bill started the evening with a review of Rutherglen Rotary Club’s achievements during the course of his presidential year, including; the art exhibition and sale of paintings which helped raise around £3500 for the RNLI, the new and very successful plant sale at Abbeyfield which raised funds for both Abbeyfield and the club’s good works, and the usual quiz and race nights raised significant income to help with the club’s local charitable works. Rotarians, their partners and Inner Wheel members were all thanked for their support of these events.

Bill also thanked the club members for their support throughout his presidential year and commented on the many examples of the Rotary Club motto - Service Above Self - which he experienced personally.

He was delighted to preside over the induction of two new members, including Rutherglen’s first female Rotarian.

Bill explained that his eyes were opened by attending Rotary district meetings, to the extensive and wide ranging charity activities carried out by district and club officers.

After an excellent meal served up by Cathkin Golf Club staff, greetings were brought by Robin Garside, from Glasgow Rotary Club, Pat Bolton From Rutherglen Inner Wheel and Robert Dickie from Cambuslang Rotary Club.

An excellent speech was then given by Tom Nisbett who regaled the audience with a summary of, and tales from, his career in education after growing up in Ayrshire and training as a PE teacher at Jordanhill College.

He was a teacher at Stonelaw High from 1974 to 1984, progressing
