Work resumes on new school after festive break
Work on completing the new Bankhead Primary School resumed this week.
South Lanarkshire Council appointed Lend Lease as principal contractor for construction of the new Rutherglen school, which will open later this year.
The new Bankhead Primary will comprise of 11 classrooms, gym, kitchen, changing area, dining hall, ICT suite, staff areas, general purpose areas / open spaces, a hygieneyg room, a multi use games area (MUGA) pitch, and a community wing.
Lynn Sherry, head of education, said: “The new Bankhead Primary School is due to be completed in spring 2015.
“The date for the staff and pupils to occupy the fantastic new building has not yet been confirmed and will be subject to discussion with the head teacher to enable us to plan accordingly and to let parents know of the arrangements.
“We will continue to liaise with the contractors and provide parents with more details next month.”
The old school, which opened in 1935, closed in January last year, with pupils being decanted to the old Spittal Primary School building, until the new building is ready to open.
Drew Kearins, the site manager for construction firm Lend Lease, said: “Our roof works are now complete with only the down pipes to install once the brick work has been completed.
“Windows and doors are now being installed along with the curtain walling sections to the North and South of the building.
“We had the new school wind and water tight prior to the Christmas break and our hard and soft landscaping works will re-commence in the new year.
“We are progressing well with the internal works, the underfloor heating and screed has been installed on the first floor and the first zone of the ground floor.
“With the screed done, we can now progress with completing the internal walls throughout the building.”
