Spiders salvage last-gasp draw

QP make point on Hampden return

- Will Henshaw

Q u e e n ’s P a r k b o s s G u s MacPherson thinks his side should have won Saturday’s game against Clyde - but was happy with a point come the final whistle.

It looked like Queen’s were destined to lose their first game back at Hampden as Clyde took the lead thanks to a goal from Iain Gray.

However the referee gave QP a last minute penalty after he deemed that Traynor fouled advancing QP keeper Muir, who joined the attack at the end of the game.

Although he wouldn’t be drawn on the penalty incident, Gus felt a point was the least his team deserved from the game.

He said: “We were delighted to get a point. We left it so late to get the equaliser. We played pretty well and had good chances in the first half. Certainly, the least we deserved from the game was a point so we take that and move on.

“The players were frustrated that they didn’t win the game . “

It was Queen’s Park first game at Hampden since November 2013, which ended in a heavy 5-0 defeat to Peterhead.

Gus said his players played well on the Hampden pitch, but it would take some getting used to before they were fully comfortable with it: “It was an education, just to see how the player’s handled themselves.

“To be fair there were spells in the game where we played very well and they looked comfortable on the pitch.

“We have to make sure we keep developing as a team. Hampden is different to most grounds that we play on so it will take some adapting to get use to it again.”

Next up Queen’s will face East Fife at Bayview Stadium this Saturday ( January 10).

The last time the two teams met ended in a 2-2 draw.

Speaking ahead of the game, Gus said: “It’ll be a difficult game. Last time we had a draw with them. East Fife are trying to get a bit of consistency with results and have been a bit stop-start this year. They’ll be trying to get back to winning ways as well.”
