Bosses rage at players’ attitude

Side beat themselves, says John

- Kenny Smith

Raging Cambuslang Rangers co- manager John Doyle has warned his players they are in danger of being discarded by the club.

The Lang crashed to a shock 1-0 home defeat by lowly Royal Albert, in a game which they were expected to comfortably win.

But John and co-boss Paddy Flannery believe that level of expectation was what cost the side dear, as the players thought they had to just turn up to win the points.

John said: “No disrespect to Royal Albert, but that was a game where we should have gone out and taken the three points.

“To call Saturday disappointing would be an understatement. The way we performed in the first half was just ridiculous - that was the worst we’ve played since Paddy and myself arrived at the club last summer.

“We put out an experienced team, with good players who know what you need to win, and we didn’t have the right attitude at all. The players probably underestimated Royal Albert, and I got the impression they thought they just had to turn up to win. Myself and Paddy aren’t happy with that.

“You just can’t afford to have that attitude, especially this year when the league is so tight.

“In our last game before Christmas, in the Port Glasgow game, we were unstoppable and were 4-0 up at half-time - we just blew them away.

“That’s what we’d hoped to build on against Royal Albert, but it just didn’t happen on Saturday. Perhaps that’s just been papering over the cracks.

“In the past, we’ve had valid excuses for the games we’ve lost when we’ve been stuck for players because of injuries, but that wasn’t the case on Saturday.

“We had a good side on the field, and a strong bench, that was more than capable of winning the game, and they just didn’t perform.

“Paddy and I will be talking with all the players this week, one to one, to discuss the way forward, and it may be that some of them will have to move on, and we’ll find players who can do the job for us, and bring them in.”

John was part i c u l a r l y disappointed that the Lang conceded the goal to Royal Albert when they had finally improved their performance.

He explained: “After half-time, we were better than we had been, and we were in the ascendancy.

“Then, they scored, and that was a real blow because we’d been starting to get ourselves together.

“Paddy said something at the start of the season, that’s starting to become very true - he told the boys that not a lot of teams would beat us, and that we’d only beat ourselves.

“That was definitely the case on Saturday. We’re capable of beating anyone when the attitude is right.

“The games are starting to run out now, and it’s important that we start to put a run of wins together.”
