Group impress judges in Money for Life Challenge
A team of young adults from Castlemilk are celebrating after reaching the Scottish final of Lloyds Banking Group’s Money for Life Challenge.
The Money for Life challenge is a national competition to inspire better money management skills in local communities across the UK supported by Young Scot.
BeYonder Ltd, based in Paisley, created the Castlemilk Healthy Eating and Wellbeing project . The project aims to help people save money by providing meal planning and recipe booklets which show how to cook and prepare the most nutritious meals possible using the most commonly available foodstuffs from local foodbanks as well as the best value for money produce from local stores.
Although BeYonder are based in Paisley, it was a group of Castlemilk youngsters who delivered the project in the community. The group consisted of Carly Morgan, Shannon Black, Ellie Ferguson, Dillon Naismith and Michael McInarlin. They fought off competition from across Scotland with their innovative project.
The groups undertook their projects over a three month period having been awarded a £500 grant from Money for Life.
The MFLC grant has enabled them to print 3,000 6-page A5 brochures. These will be distributed via foodbanks and around the local community.
Christina Mackay, Managing Director of BeYonder, said: “We’re thrilled our project has caught the attention of judges.
“We achieved our key objective which was to address the link between poverty and poor health by showing people on low incomes how to eat as healthily as possible within their means whilst also becoming more active within their local community.”
David Rowsell, Head of the Money for Life Programme at Lloyds Banking Group said: “The Money for Life Challenge helps young people create a money management project to benefit their local community and enables them to develop the skills they need to manage their own money more effectively too. Money for Life is one of the core programmes at the heart of Lloyds Banking Group’s aim to help Britain prosper.“I have been hugely impressed by the innovation and enthusiasm of all the teams who have taken part in the Challenge this year.
