Pathfinders group mark 50th birthday
A King’s Park Church group is thinking of others as it marks its 50th birthday this year.
Since 1965, the Pathfinders, a group for boys aged between five and seven years, has been running in King’s Park Church.
To mark their birthday, the boys and the leaders are holding a fundraising morning this Saturday, April 25, in King’s Park Church, at 242 Castlemilk Road.
And to mark their birthday, they’re raising money for another group called Pathfinders, who raise and train German Shepherds as guides to blind people in the UK.
Gordon Wilson from the church group said: “The group was founded 50 years ago by a lady in the church, Cathy Shearer.
“She was involved with the Boys’ Brigade, but she saw a gap in our church, in terms of not having anything for the boys in the P1-3 age group.
“We didn’t have any Anchor Boys, so we started our own group, the Pathfinders.
“We operate independently as our own organisation, and we’ve now been running for 50 years, which is fantastic.”
This Saturday’s event will mainly be a coffee morning, with additional fundraising events also taking place.
Gordon said: “We don’t like to hold fundraising events too often, as we know there’s a lot of demands on people these days, as our last one was two years ago.
“We’re raising funds to sponsor a dog with Pathfinder Dogs who provide assistance German Shepherds.
“When we found out there was another group called Pathfinders out there, it made perfect sense for us to support them, as they do a lot of great work to help the blind.
“It’s also an appropriate charity as our founder Cathy was also very fond of dogs - it’s the right thing for us to do.”
The money raised will allow the boys to sponsor a Pathfinder dog.
The coffee morning will run between 10am and 1pm. Entry is by donation.
