Powering his way to success
Cambuslang gym proud of its British champion
A Cambuslang gym has produced a British champion in the sport of power lifting.
Chris Wong (29), from East Kilbride, is a member of Future Fitness on Langlea Road.
He was competing in the 75kgs class at the British Full Power Championships, held at the end of March.
The tournament, which was held in Staffordshire, saw Chris compete against 19 other athletes in his class.
He not only scooped the title, but also set a new British record in the process. He set a new record for his squat at 216kgs and for his total lift, which combines, squat, bench press and deadlift, at 597.5kgs.
In order to gain entry in to the British Championships, Chris had to first compete in the Scottish Championships, held at the end of last year at Varsity Gym in Glasgow. He qualified in style, setting two Scottish records with a 215kg squat and 570kg total.
Chris, who runs his own personal training business, took up power lifting after meeting Peter McDougall, who runs Future Fitness.
He said: “My performance at the British was a personal best, so I preformed my best ever lifts, which was good.
“I use to be a body builder and then I met Peter and he got me in to power lifting. I love it, I love training towards something and there’s no better test of your strength.”
The events are run by the British Drug Free Powerlifting Association, which was formed in 1989, as stated on their website, to provide “an alternative National platform for Drug Free Competition at a time when the use of Performance Enhancing Drugs was rife”.
After his success at the British event, Chris will go on to compete in the World PowerliftingChampionshipsinNovember in Silicy.
He was also picked to represent Scotland in the Four Nations Powerlifting Championship which will be held in August in Glasgow.
He added: “I can’t wait to go to Sicily, my ambition is to become a World Champion.”
