Yamakai take the honours

Members of a Rutherglen karate club won several awards after entering competitio­ns last month.

Yamakai members were involved in two competitio­ns in March. First up was the SKF Championsh­ips in Edinburgh, which saw the Yamakai members win honours.

Carl Muscat in the Senior Male Open, Emma Boyle in the Senior Female Open and Matthew Grant in the Junior grade under-60 kilos Kumite won silver.

Bronze medals went to Matthew Miller in the cadet male under-60 kilos and Amy Luke in the Junior Female open.

Next the squad travelled to Penrith for the Annual Junior Open Championsh­ips returning with three gold, five silver seven bronze and with four teams also placed.

Golds went to Sarah O’Brien, Erin O’Brien and Issac Eddleston with Silvers going to Mark Anderson, Jack Johnston, Kerri Robertshaw, Carly Semple, Matthew Miller. Bronze awards went to Simone Tonner, Haley Anderson, Keir Fraser, Amy MacDonald, Bellamy Anderson and Adam Duerden. Four Yamakai teams also won Bronze medals on the day. The Girls under-nine-years, both 12 and 13-years boys and girls teams and the cadet male team took bronze.

Yamakai meet twice weekly in Stonelaw Sport Centre and are always looking for new members. Beginners are accepted from five-years-old upwards with the first lesson free of charge.
