All’s fair after share of spoils

Gus delighted as Spiders clinch second

- Will Henshaw

Queen’s Park boss Gus MacPherson said a draw was a fair result as his team came away from Gayfield with a share of the spoils on Saturday.

A goal in the last minute of the game secured a draw for the Queens - as well as second spot in league.

Of the game, Gus said: “I would have said a draw was probably a fair result. They were just about the best team in the first half, but we controlled the game for long periods in the second half.

“We controlled the game and had a lot of possession but didn’t really create any clear cut chances.

“We got our rewards the end of the second half and scored a good goal. There wasn’t time for us to get a winner, there was only about 30 second left.”

Last season Queen’s Park finished bottom of the League Two table with 24 points. However, with two games still to play this season, they currently have 60 points.

It’s been a remarkable transformation and Gus was quick to praise his players for their hard work this season in making it possible.

He added: “I think if you had asked anyone on May 2014 would you take second place at the end of this season they would have bit your hand off.

“We’re already 36 points better off than we were last season. It’s been an incredible effort by the players. Their attitude in training, in games, in the dressing room has been exceptional this season. It is an exceptional group of players, they deserve all the praise.

Queen’s have two games left to play - against East Stirling at Hampden next week and ending the campaign against rivals Clyde at Broadwood.

Shaun Rooney went off injured on Saturday’s game, and it’s doubtful Spiders fans will see him back in the hoops this season.

Although Gus wants to keep the momentum going ahead of the playoffs, he was keen to stress his squad will need ot be wary to not pick up any more injuries.

He added: “It’s all about the play-offs now. We have two games left, and of course we want to keep the momentum going, but we need to be careful that we don’t pick up any more injuries.” Queen’s Park secured second spot on Saturday after a 1-1 draw with Arbroath at the weekend.

On 24 minutes the home side took the lead as a defensive tangle from QP led to McWalter playing in Murray – and he buried the ball behind Muir.

The home side were playing well and repelled QP attacks without too much trouble, and threatened themselves on the break.

QP’s best chance int he second half came when McCallum had to race from his box to deny John Carter as he chased a ball over the top.

Queen’s left it late but managed ot secure a point in injury time. A high ball into the Arbroath box was only partially cleared by Nicoll and as it fell to Sean Burns, he crashed a low volley into the corner of the net.
