Boss wanted goal difference boost

Harvey hoped for even more

- Kenny Smith

Glens gaffer Willie Harvey watched his side put four past Neilston on Saturday - but felt his team should have done better.

The Glens have continued their relentless rise up the Super League Division One table as they kept their recent good run of wins going at the weekend.

However, the manager felt that they were deserving of an even higher winning margin at New Southcroft.

Willie said: “We missed a penalty, had a couple of chances that we should have taken, and really, it could have been better, as it was a good chance to add to our goal difference.

“But that said, if I’d been offered 4- 1 beforehand, I would have quite happily taken that.

“We’ve just been getting things right - we’ve been working hard in training and the players are doing what they’ve been asked to do.

“You can’t ask for any more as they’ve been brilliant in the last few weeks.

“Their commitment has been perfect, because they’re really getting their heads down.

“A lot of people were concerned when we went five games without a win earlier in the season, but I kept telling them it was five games we deserved to win.

“It’s frustrating when I look at it now, because if we’d taken five or six points from that run, we would now be sitting second in the league.

“The thing is, I believe we actually played better in some of those games during the fivematch run than we have in some of the games when we’ve run recently.

“The most important thing for us now is that the confidence is back, and we’re winning games.

“When the confidence is there, you find you are taking the chances that you weren’t before. Winning becomes a habit - just like losing.”

Last Wednesday night, the Glens hosted Clydebank in a midweek fixture, for a rearranged Euroscot Engineering Central League Cup round one clash.

The Glens were beaten 2-1, with the visitors taking the lead in 55 minutes.

However, Glencairn showed their spirit against the super premier side, and equalised through Ross McNeil on 64 minutes with his 11th goal in 11 games.

Phil Barclay, a former Glencairn midfielder, drove an unsaveable angled shot past Hutchison from 20 yards to make it 2-1 on 70 minutes.

Despite the cup loss, Willie is content to concentrate on keeping their league form going.

The side have now won five games in a row, to fully ignite their promotion charge.

He said: “We broke the run of results at exactly the right time.

“We started this run at the place no one would have expected us to, as Pollok had been unbeaten at home all season, and we went there and won 2-0.

“We’ve been pretty injury-free over the last few weeks, and that’s helping us with a consistent squad to choose from.”
